The Engineering Communications Internship Program is a hands-on opportunity for undergraduate students to gain real-world experience in marketing, media and storytelling within the NC State College of Engineering.
Interns contribute to high-visibility content that showcases research, student experiences and industry partnerships across the college. This program is designed to develop the next generation of creators, strategists and communicators through structured mentorship, collaborative production and portfolio-driven work.
Students will be selected into one of three specialized tracks based on their skills and interests.
Internship Tracks
Video Production Track
Produce cinematic and short-form video content that brings engineering stories to life.
Responsibilities:
- Film and edit short-form and long-form video for YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn and other platforms
- Capture professional-quality video and audio in labs, classrooms and events
- Operate Sony mirrorless cameras and production equipment
- Edit content using Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects
- Assist with concept development, scripting and visual storytelling
- Contribute to series such as faculty spotlights, student features and research videos
- Assist in producing livestreams and event capture
Social Media Track
Develop and execute content designed for reach, engagement and platform growth.
Responsibilities:
- Create and publish short-form content optimized for Instagram, LinkedIn and emerging platforms
- Identify trends and adapt them for an engineering audience
- Create and edit imagery, including graphics and photos
- Collaborate with video and writing interns to distribute content across channels
- Assist with content calendars and campaign planning
- Track performance metrics and identify opportunities to improve engagement
- Support live event coverage and real-time storytelling
Writing and Scientific Communications Track
Translate complex engineering research into clear, compelling stories.
Responsibilities:
- Research, report and write articles, features and web content highlighting research, students, faculty, partnerships, events and more
- Conduct interviews with faculty, students and industry partners
- Translate technical topics into accessible language for broad audiences
- Support both research-focused storytelling and student-centered feature stories
- Assist with website updates, newsletters and strategic communications initiatives
- Ensure all content aligns with NC State editorial style and brand standards

Core Responsibilities (All Tracks)
- Collaborate with Engineering Communications staff and fellow interns on content projects
- Pitch ideas and help identify stories across the college
- Create and manage projects through the entire storytelling cycle, from ideation to publication
- Manage assignments using tools such as Asana
- Participate in regular team meetings, training sessions and content reviews
- Deliver polished, professional work aligned with college priorities

Qualifications
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Interest in marketing, communications, media or storytelling
Preferred (varies by track):
- Video: Experience with Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects; familiarity with Sony cameras
- Social: Experience creating content for social media platforms
- Writing: Coursework or experience in journalism, communications or related fields
- Familiarity with tools such as Asana or Notion is a plus
Training will be provided based on track and experience level.
